SPORTY pupils at a Staffordshire special school were narrowly beaten in the final of a regional basketball competition – and have enlisted the help of Leicester Tigers are they aim to go one better when they compete in a regional rugby tournament next month.

Staffordshire special school take part in basketball competition

Key Stage Four students from Queen’s Croft High School in Lichfield finished as runners-up in the WMSSSA annual basketball competition, losing 10-0 to Hednesford in the final.

They’re gearing up for a busy year of sporting activities including a rounders tournament and cricket competition.

But before that, they will compete in a rugby tournament against other special schools in the West Midlands and, to help them prepare, they will be welcoming coaches from Leicester Tigers into school to help them prepare.

PE teacher Laura Grimshaw said: “We have a diverse group of pupils here at Queen’s Croft and they were a joy to watch. I couldn’t be more proud of how they conducted themselves and we’re looking forward to learning some tricks of the trade from the coaches at Leicester Tigers as we prepare for our next competition.”

The team who competed in the WMSSSA competition included track star Quinn and Ava, who plays in defence for ladies’ football team. Brereton FC.

Headteacher Clive Lawrence said: “Our school mission and vision is about inspiring GREATness. The ‘T’ in GREATness is around talent and fostering and nurturing pupils’ individual interests.

“Sporting events and competitions play an important part in our personal development curriculum. I am extremely proud of our students in representing our school at a local, competitive sports competition.

“Their behaviour was impeccable and their achievement as runners-ups should be well celebrated.

“I am grateful to the PE department for going above and beyond and for organising and co-ordinating such an event.”
