A Midlands rail maintenance firm has won the contract to manage a health and safety compliance programme across 18 UK depots operated by Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR).
MTMS, based in Swadlincote, picked up the work to co-ordinate the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR), starting in the New Year.
The contract takes in locations from the East of England to the South Coast and will provide GTR with a complete assessment, remedial works and final certification package delivered through a single, coordinated programme.

DSEAR brings the ATEX and Chemical Agents Directive together and introduced to protect staff working at premises where dangerous substances, such as chemicals, are present.
The work for GTR will take place include detailed assessments of Controlled Emission Toilet (CET) systems, hazardous area classification and the identification of any required safety improvements across each site.
Working in collaboration with specialist compliance partners, MTMS will lead the entire programme, coordinating all assessments and undertaking every remedial action arising from the reports.
Once the improvements have been completed, a final site review and certification stage will confirm that each depot meets its full regulatory obligations, giving GTR complete assurance that its facilities are safe, compliant, and aligned with best practice.
Matt Forst, managing director of MTMS, said: “We’re very pleased to have been awarded this competitive tender and to be offering GTR peace of mind by taking charge of their DSEAR compliance.
“This contract demonstrates that we have the capability to deliver complex multi-site safety and compliance programmes for the UK rail sector and by bringing everything together through one point of responsibility we’re offering a streamlined, reliable route to full regulatory compliance.”
