Students at Allestree Woodlands School have shared a video of useful phrases in British Sign Language across the school.
The video, which features a sign for each day of the week, was put together to mark British Sign Language Week.
It includes useful phrases such as “I need help” and “I can help you” as well as “Please”, “Thank you”, “How are you?” and “I understand/I don’t understand”.
The school in Blenheim Drive has 26 Deaf students and Communications Support Worker Sam Bennett is keen to make sure BSL is visible to all staff and students at the school.
“We really want students to see BSL everywhere around the school,” said Sam. “It makes the language, which is the first language for many students here, part of everyday life.”
The school is already at the forefront of making BSL part of mainstream education and is supporting and advising work to create a GCSE in the language.
Now, Sam is committed to making sure that work to raise the profile of BSL continues at Allestree Woodlands School.
“I am working to try to get videos featured on the noticeboard screens around the school which have the important messages signed in BSL,” he said. “These screens are seen by everyone and are where people go for information so having sign language there every day will just be more inclusive and, again, will make BSL part of daily life for everyone.”
