Leadership expert Kul Mahay launches new podcast with guests including police chiefs, East Midlands Chamber executive and Gogglebox star

06/01/2022

CHIEF constables, decision makers working in central Government and Gogglebox star Baasit Siddiqui – who also has his own successful education business – are among the first guests on a brand-new podcast being recorded in Derby.

Hosted by Kul Mahay, who spent more than 30 years working with Derbyshire Constabulary before setting up his own emotional intelligence and leadership business, guests on the weekly show will include Andy Marsh, chief executive of the College of Policing, Scott Knowles – chief executive of the East Midlands Chamber – and Baasit Siddiqui; best known for being on Channel 4 TV show Gogglebox and founder of Siddiqui Education.

Called The Human Centred Leadership podcast and available on all streaming platforms, Kul’s first guest was Keith Fraser, chair of the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales.

“I have been procrastinating about doing a podcast for two years now, to celebrate the great work I’ve done with some incredible organisations,” said Kul, who has also filmed the podcasts for his YouTube channel.

“I’ve kept telling myself ‘now’s not the right time’ and ‘who will want to listen to me?’ but, spurred on by friends, I finally put things into motion and I’m delighted with the first episode.

“I have interviewed incredibly fascinating people at the very top end of industries, from policing to education, from those working in public services to chief executives of top organisations and charities. Every single one of these guests has one thing in common; a firm belief in emotional intelligence to great effect.

“Keith Fraser is someone who I have admired for a long while. Like me, he spent 30 years working for the police and cites his greatest achievement being the setting up the cultural and communities resource unit in London before moving to the West Midlands.

“A keen sports fan, Keith is a trustee for Sport Birmingham and the 999 Cenotaph and was appointed as a commissioner on the UK Race and Ethnic Disparities Commission by the Prime Minister. He impressed me with his thoughts on emotional intelligence, the pandemic and how it has affected organisations and cultures.

“Keith is very clear about what his values are and is passionate about ensuring that every young person is given the opportunity to be themselves and flourish. He was a great, first guest to have on my podcast.”

Kul’s next guest is Dr Kathryn Murray, an educational pschycologist from Australia who helps teachers create learning environments that best connect with students.

His dream guest, though, would be Jacinda Ardern – prime minister of New Zealand.

“I have a lot of respect and admiration for Jacinda Ardern, particularly for her handling of the coronavirus pandemic,” said Kul, who will also be releasing a book on emotional intelligence later this year.

“I have contacted her office and had a reply back but, unfortunately, she has other commitments right now. Maybe I’ll get her on later in the year!”
