A cancer charity says it is looking forward to seeing its volunteers lacing up their trainers and getting back out on the road after joining the Derby 10 Mile road race as its official charity this year.
Annabel’s Angels, which gives grants to help pay the living costs of local families living with cancer, has been named as the official charity for the event, which is returning to the city’s streets on November 14 following its postponement last year.
It is the fifth time that Annabel’s Angels has been the event’s official charity and as part of the partnership its stand will be given a prominent location in the race village, close to the start and finish line at Derby Arena on Pride Park.

It will also be publicised in the event guide and pre and post-race emails and has been granted a number of places for its own runners to enable it to raise much-needed funds.
The Derby 10 Mile, which is renowned as a fast and flat race for runners looking to achieve a personal best, will take participants from the Arena, over the road bridge into Wilmorton and into Alvaston Park.
From there they will run alongside the River Derwent and onto the Alvaston bypass at the Blue Jay pub, head into Elvaston Castle via the golden gates on the A6 and finally return to the Arena back along the river.
A sell-out 2,000 people took part in 2019’s event, including Annabel’s Angels chairperson Simon Hancox, who welcomed the Derby 10 Mile’s return and said everyone at the charity, which is run entirely by volunteers, is looking forward to race day.
He said: “It’s wonderful to see the Derby 10 Mile is returning for 2021 and we’re honoured to have been invited to become the official charity once again.

Annabel’s Angels has been the official charity partner for the Derby 10 Mile race since it was launched in 2016, including the last time it was held in 2019.
“A significant proportion of the money we raise comes through our association with events such as the Derby 10 Mile and so its return is a huge boost for us because it means that we will be able to continue our work to help local families who are struggling to meet the day-to-day costs that come with living with cancer.
“We have already signed up 10 brave volunteers who’ll be running to raise funds for our charity, but we still have spaces available if anyone would like to take on this challenge on our behalf.”
Emma Evans, event manager, said: “We are delighted to be working with Simon and his team at Annabel’s Angels, who have partnered with us since the event began in 2016, and it’s our aim to provide a large platform for the charity to work towards its vision of improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their families in Derby.
“The planning that has gone into bringing back this event, bearing in mind the coronavirus pandemic, has been immense and we are very hopeful that runners, whether they’ve run with us previously or are newcomers to this event, will sign up to support Annabel’s Angels.”
