A POPULAR Derby gastro pub will start serving breakfasts as it looks to bring more diners through its doors following the Government’s 10pm curfew in England.
Easton Andrea, who owns House of Darwin, in Shelton Lock, says that the decision has been made as the pub looks to boost revenue following a difficult year for the hospitality industry.
Last week, the government announced that pubs and restaurants must shut by 10pm every day after an increase in coronavirus cases in England. Venues that are licensed to sell alcohol – like House of Darwin – are restricted by law to table service only.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the extension of a VAT cut for the hospitality and tourism sectors on Thursday. The temporary reduction of VAT rates from 20% to 5% for food and non-alcoholic drinks will remain in place until March 31, 2021.
Mr Andrea, who set up Honest Pizzas – a New York-inspired take out in the former Frankie & Benny’s building on Manor Road, Derby, during lockdown – hopes that his plan – with breakfasts being served from this Wednesday (September30) will help protect jobs.
“We are going to lose eight hours trading, that’s one chef, one front of house member here at House of Darwin if we don’t do something,” he said.
“Now is the time to exercise protection and to be innovative. By doing what we’re doing – opening for breakfast, which will be available to eat in or as a takeaway – we will be able to keep hold of staff. We won’t lose anyone.

“We’re trying to stay as smart as we can and are doing everything we can to push through this difficult time.”
House of Darwin were granted an extension to their opening hours by Derby City Council back in August. The pub will now open from 9am until closing, seven days a week to cater for breakfast.
Dishes will include eggs benedict, granola with yoghurt and honey, and, of course, a full English breakfast.
A takeaway service will also be available for customers to grab and go.
“If people are on their way to work, they can pop into House of Darwin for a coffee and croissant or a bacon sandwich,” added Mr Andrea, “it will be breakfast – but with a sophisticated, House of Darwin twist.”
