A Derbyshire company has agreed to sponsor the historic Turnditch and Windley Show for the third year running – after this year’s event saw visitor numbers up by 40%.
More than 14,500 people attended the 2018 show – which was sponsored by Lubrizol, in Hazelwood – entering competitions and enjoying the stalls and displays.
Next year the show, which has been an annual event since the late 1940s, will be held at the showground on Wirksworth Road, on September 7th.
The event is organised by a dedicated band of volunteers, with physical support from the Belper Young Farmers Association.
This year’s star attraction was an appearance from The Red Barrows, a Derbyshire-based wheelbarrow display team.
Auctioneer and antiques expert Charles Hanson, of TVs Bargain Hunt and Flog It!, presented trophies and certificates to the competition winners of categories such as floral art, flowers, fruit and photography.
There were also vintage tractors, classic cars, horses and ponies as well as dog shows, falconry displays and a traditional tug of war.
Committee secretary Michael Halls said: “The show has grown beyond all recognition since it began in the 1940s, but I think one of the reasons it is still successful is because we have maintained the traditional village small show atmosphere.
“We don’t charge very much to get in and families need to spend very little once they’re here: there is something for every member of the family.
“We’d like to thank Lubrizol for their continued support, setting up events of this nature can be costly, but visitor numbers have shown how much the community appreciates the event.
“We were lucky with the weather this year – it was almost too hot – which meant that people stayed all day, rather than going home once the temperature dropped.”
Funds raised through the show are put back into the pot for next year, but any extra raised this year will be donated to charities beneficial to the whole community.
