A Derbyshire community choir that started life as a small group of women singing for fun has grown into a 38-strong vocal force – and is now raising thousands of pounds for local causes.
The Wildflower Community Choir, which was founded in Breaston, raised more than £3,000 last year which it donated to the Friends of the Baby Unit at the Royal Derby Hospital.
Now the choir, which is led by musical director Emma Morehouse, is hoping to raise money for Derby Women’s Centre and is busy preparing for its biggest fundraising – the Annual Musical Showcase.

The event on November 22 will be compered by former Derby North MP and leadership expert Amanda Solloway and will be held in Trent College Chapel, Long Eaton.
Emma said: “Wildflower began as a space for women to come together, breathe out, and just sing for the joy of it. It’s become so much more than a choir – it’s a community where people feel seen, supported and safe to express whatever they’re going through.”
Although the choir started with just a handful of women it has blossomed into a five-part harmony choir with members spanning more than 50 years in age.

At its heart, the choir is described as a sanctuary for emotional expression, connection and community. Rehearsals are held on Thursday evenings and members say it’s a chance to ‘put pain to purpose’ and feel ‘washed clean’ through the power of song.
The culture of the choir is firmly rooted in kindness, growth and mutual support, particularly for those going through difficult times. Mental wellbeing is a clear priority – with members on hand to offer a listening ear – and the group proudly welcomes neurodivergent voices and experiences.
The choir’s growing reputation has also attracted some prestigious invitations. The group has performed in the gardens at Chatsworth House over the summer and has been invited back to sing there again at Christmas.
Amanda Solloway said: “It’s an absolute privilege to be involved with the Wildflower Community Choir. What Emma and the singers have created here is so much more than a choir – it’s a lifeline, a safe space and a real force for good in our community. You can feel the warmth, the courage and the support in every song they sing.
“I am really looking forward to the annual showcase and compering an event which will raise money for Derby Women’s Centre. It does vital work supporting women through some of the most challenging times in their lives.
“I know the people of Derbyshire will get right behind this event – it promises to be a truly uplifting evening.”
