Employees at science company Lubrizol have got into the true spirit of Christmas by donating to the UK’s largest independent food bank in Huddersfield which is seeing rising demand in the cost-of-living crisis.
Staff at Lubrizol’s plant on Leeds Road got together to make donations to The Welcome Centre, to help people in need put food on the table.
Based in Lord Street, The Welcome Centre has been going for 25 years and has seen a 20 per cent rise in need over the past year.
The centre has given out the food equivalent of 400,000 meals in the last 12 months alone, supporting around 6,500 people of which a third are children.
Emma Greenough, fundraising manager at The Welcome Centre, said demand had skyrocketed during Covid and had once again been rising during the current cost-of-living crisis.
She said: “This is the time of year where with the spirit of Christmas we see local businesses get in touch to support us and look to get involved in their local community.
“It’s brilliant to be supported by generous businesses like Lubrizol. We’re very grateful and we’d love it to continue.”
Sinead Quinn from science company Lubrizol said: “It was great to be able to support The Welcome Centre this year. Christmas is a time of giving so it seemed very appropriate to us to be able to give food to this very worthy cause as we approach the festive season.
“It’s very important to us at Lubrizol to be able to give back to the local community. Giving food to The Welcome Centre was part of several initiatives we are involved in. Our employees also spent time wrapping up boxes destined for young cancer patients, as part of the Project Youth Cancer Christmas box appeal that we have supported for a few years now. We’re glad to be in the position to offer our support.”
