A Derby secondary school ended the academic year by celebrating the many cultures, traditions and backgrounds that make up its school community.
The Bemrose School, in Uttoxeter Road, transformed its final day of term into a colourful celebration of diversity, bringing together pupils and staff for its annual Culture Day.
Now in its second year, the event has quickly become one of the highlights of the school calendar, with music, dance, food, performances and interactive activities giving pupils the chance to take part, share their experiences and celebrate their heritage.
Year 9 pupil, Eri, said: “Culture Day is my favourite day of the year because we get to celebrate and learn about each other’s cultures. I’ve learnt so much about my friends.
“My favourite part is the culture show because you get to see all the different styles of dancing and how people express themselves. It’s really interesting and so much fun to watch.
“This is why I love coming to Bemrose. We are all different, but we respect each other for who we are and embrace those differences. I have friends from all over the world and today we’re proud to celebrate that together.
“We shouldn’t all stay in one box. We should be proud to share our heritage.”
As well as celebrating diversity, the event also encouraged teamwork and enterprise. Working in mixed-form groups, pupils designed and created fundraising stalls, giving them the opportunity to collaborate with classmates they may not usually work alongside. Money raised during the day will be reinvested into the school’s charitable fund to support future projects.
Activities throughout the school included a Bhangra dance workshop, performances from a Roma community church band, cultural displays and interactive experiences, before pupils came together for the culture show featuring performances inspired by their own backgrounds and traditions.
Pupils were also encouraged to wear traditional dress or clothing that reflected their heritage, adding to the colourful atmosphere across the school and giving them another way to share their identity with others.
The celebrations began with the sound of steel drums welcoming pupils into the school hall for a special end-of-year assembly, setting the tone for a day focused on inclusion, understanding and pride.
Headteacher Neil Wilkinson, said: “I am incredibly proud of the way our pupils embrace and respect each other’s cultures and differences. Wouldn’t the world be a better place if we could all do that?
“We introduced Culture Day as a special way to finish the school year, giving pupils the opportunity to express themselves while learning more about one another’s heritage.
“This is only the second year we’ve held the event, but it’s already growing year on year because the pupils have embraced it with so much enthusiasm.
“It gives them the chance to celebrate what makes each person unique while recognising the values we all share. There has been a real buzz around the school for weeks leading up to today.
“There is such a wonderful atmosphere of fun, respect and celebration throughout the school. We can all learn a great deal from these young people and the way they value and celebrate each other’s differences.”
