A Derbyshire school has thanked its local community after a successful fundraising effort saw residents dig deep to help bring outdoor learning to life.
Bishop Pursglove CofE Primary School in Tideswell – part of the Derby Diocese Academy Trust (DDAT) – has added a new outdoor classroom within its school grounds, following fundraising efforts from both the school and the wider community.
The new space – a wooden building designed to blend into its surroundings, with views overlooking the Peak District – can be used all year round in all weather conditions, allowing pupils to maintain a strong connection with nature whatever the weather.
It will be used for group discussions, creative activities and outdoor-inspired learning, offering a balance between structured teaching and free exploration.
The project was inspired by the success of the school’s forest school, which was recently enhanced through a grant. Having seen first-hand the benefits of outdoor learning, staff were keen to develop the provision further.
Year 4 student Robyn Grainger, said: “I really like the new outdoor classroom. It is so much fun learning outside in nature.
“It has been nice working outside doing problem solving activities, planting bulbs and making bird feeds.
“I think learning outside is much better as it makes you feel calm and relaxed but is also good fun and makes you feel happy.”
The new addition has also enabled the school’s eco club to take a more active role in promoting sustainability, helping to nurture fruit, vegetable and plant patches while encouraging pupils to deepen their understanding of the environment.
Working in collaboration with its Friends of School committee, the school organised a range of fundraising events and activities, which included a fell race – an off-road event typically held across hilly, upland terrain – as well as a summer fayre, a school disco and a stall at the local food festival.
Headteacher Sarah Craig said: “We are so grateful to the community for their generosity and kindness.
“Without this, this fantastic addition to the school would not have been possible. It has strengthened our relationship with the community, which we really value, and shown our children the power of working together.
“Following the success of the events, we plan to make them an annual fixture to continue building on those relationships.
“This outdoor classroom supports hands-on, experiential learning and helps foster resilience, independence and a deeper respect for the environment.
“With two staff now trained as Forest School leaders and our beautiful surroundings, we want to make the most of outdoor learning opportunities.”
The space has also been recognised as a calm and supportive environment for pupils with additional needs, including those with special educational needs (SEN) and social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) challenges. Its connection to nature helps children feel more settled, focused and ready to learn, while also supporting their wellbeing.
The fundraising campaign proved so successful that it exceeded its £ £11780 necessary to purchase the facility, with additional funds now set to be used to further enhance the school’s forest school provision.
Sarah Clark said: “We are incredibly proud of Bishop Pursglove CofE Primary School and the Tideswell community for what they have achieved together. This project is a great example of what can be achieved through strong school and community partnership.
“Outdoor learning is vital for children’s development, supporting not only academic progress but also wellbeing, confidence and understanding of the world around them.
“This new space will provide enriching experiences for years to come, inspiring curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.”
