Inspectors highlight ‘deep-rooted, compassionate’ culture at Derbyshire primary school

12/05/2026

Staff and pupils at a Derbyshire primary have been described as a ‘loving school
family’ by inspectors who also praised the strong support for vulnerable children.

St Giles Church of England Primary & Nursery School in Matlock is celebrating after
receiving a highly positive Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools
(SIAMS) report.

Inspectors described the school as a place where “individuals are known and valued
as the unique person they are within a loving school family” and highlighted the
profound impact the school’s Christian ethos has on pupils, staff and the wider
community.

The report recognised several notable strengths, including the school’s “deep-rooted,
compassionate and aspirational culture”, its strong support for vulnerable pupils and
families, and the way children are inspired to strive for justice and make a positive
difference in the world around them.

Inspectors also praised the school’s culture of wellbeing, noting that positive
relationships and mutual care “powerfully and tangibly enhance lives and
relationships”.

The report highlighted the way pupils are nurtured to overcome challenges, grow in
confidence and develop resilience, both through the curriculum and wider
opportunities including forest school activities and enrichment experiences.

The school’s provision for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities
(SEND), along with those considered vulnerable, was also singled out for particular
praise.

The report noted that staff provide “targeted care” with “great compassion”, ensuring
pupils are supported to thrive despite personal challenges.

Strong partnerships with Derby Diocesan Academy Trust (DDAT), the diocese, the
church and the Matlock and Dales Primary Partnership were also recognised as a
major strength, helping the school remain “outward-looking” and committed to
supporting others.

The inspection found that pupils demonstrate a strong understanding of justice and
responsibility, taking part in initiatives including litter-picking campaigns,
environmental projects and community support activities such as the school’s
“Kindness Christmas Countdown”.

Head of School Bethany Simpson said: “We are incredibly proud of this report
because it truly reflects the heart of our school community.

“At St Giles, we want every child to know they are valued, supported and capable of
achieving great things, whatever challenges they may face.

“Our vision is at the centre of everything we do and it is wonderful to see the
inspectors recognise the caring relationships, sense of belonging and opportunities
that help our pupils flourish both academically and personally.”

The SIAMS inspection evaluates how effectively church schools live out their
Christian vision in all aspects of school life and education.

Sarah Clark, CEO of Derby Diocesan Academy Trust, said: “This report is a
testament to the dedication of our staff, governors, families, church and wider
community, all of whom work together to create such a nurturing and aspirational
environment for our children.

“Congratulations to everyone connected to the school for this wonderful recognition.
The report captures exactly what makes St Giles so special – a deeply caring and
inclusive community where children are encouraged to persevere, flourish and
become the very best versions of themselves.

“We are particularly proud that the inspection recognised the school’s strong
Christian vision, commitment to wellbeing and the exceptional support provided for
vulnerable pupils and families. These are values that sit at the heart of everything we
strive for across DDAT schools.”
