Pupils from Bakewell CofE Infant School celebrate their recent SIAMS report

A Derbyshire infant school has been praised for its nurturing environment, where pupils are encouraged to ‘shine a light for others’ in all aspects of school life.

Bakewell Church of England Infant School – part of the Derby Diocesan Academy Trust (DDAT) – was visited by an inspector as part of the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) process, which evaluates the effectiveness of a school’s Christian vision, values and leadership.

The report highlighted how the school’s deeply embedded Christian vision inspires both pupils and adults, shaping attitudes, relationships and aspirations. Pupils were noted for confidently articulating their desire to be a “light for others”, demonstrating a strong understanding of kindness, service and encouragement.

Inspector Sandra Stapleton said: “Bakewell Church of England Infant School, though small in size, demonstrates a powerful culture of compassionate love and acceptance.

“Its inclusive ethos ensures that pupils, staff and families feel known, valued and supported.”

A simple but impactful ‘light jar’ initiative was also commended for celebrating those who live out the school’s values, reinforcing positive behaviour and helping pupils understand what it means to be a ‘shining star’.

Headteacher Cath Lee said: “Our vision to ‘shine a light for others’ is at the heart of everything we do.

“We are incredibly proud of our pupils, who demonstrate kindness, compassion and a real understanding of how they can make a difference to others every day.

“This recognition reflects the dedication of our staff, the support of our families and the strong sense of community we have built together.

“We are a church school and everyone is welcome here – of all faiths and none.”

Parents and carers spoke positively about the school’s ethos, highlighting how it shapes children’s behaviour both in school and beyond.

They also praised the tailored support available for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), as well as those experiencing anxiety, bereavement or family separation.

Collective worship was described as inclusive and engaging, bringing the school community together through singing, drama, reflection and prayer. Pupils play an active role, helping to recognise those who demonstrate the school’s values and contributing to a strong sense of belonging.

The report also recognised the school’s strong commitment to wellbeing, with leaders prioritising staff work–life balance and providing high levels of pastoral support.

The school’s partnership with the local church was also highlighted, with initiatives such as ‘Open the Book’ enriching pupils’ understanding of Christian stories and their relevance to everyday life.

Dr Sarah Clark, chief executive officer of the Derby Diocesan Academy Trust, said: “This report is a wonderful reflection of the caring and inclusive culture at Bakewell Church of England Infant School.

“It is clear that the school’s vision is lived out daily, enabling pupils and staff to flourish both academically and personally.”
