Inspector full of praise for William Gilbert during SIAMS visit

19/03/2026

A Derbyshire primary school has been praised for giving pupils ‘abundant opportunities to live life to the full’ following a glowing inspection.

William Gilbert Endowed Church of England Primary and Nursery School, in Duffield – part of the Derby Diocesan Academy Trust (DDAT) – has been visited by an inspector as part of the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS) report, which examines the effectiveness of a school’s Christian vision, values, and leadership.

The report highlighted the exemplary behaviour of pupils, the warmth of their welcome and the confidence and depth of knowledge they demonstrated throughout the day.

In addition, it was noted ‘the school is marked by a profound sense of care and compassion for others’, while praising pupils’ strong understanding of social justice, tolerance and moral responsibility, highlighting the positive difference they are making in the communities of Duffield and Belper.

Pupils are encouraged to translate their faith into action, with the inspection recognising their involvement in local charities, hospices and community initiatives, alongside projects promoting environmental responsibility.

Headteacher, Helen Britten, said: “Our school vision, ‘Through faith, hope and love, we learn together,’ continues to guide everything we do.

“To have such affirming feedback is testament to the commitment, compassion and dedication shown every day by our staff and to the invaluable support of our parents and wider community.

“It is heart-warming to see that the inspector recognised the positive impact of all this on our pupils and school life.”

The inspector also noted that the school provides pupils with ‘opportunities to “be more, not have more”’, encouraging them to develop their talents, grow in character, and take responsibility for themselves and their communities.

Daily collective worship, described as the wellspring of school life, is rooted in the Christian vision and offers pupils and adults regular opportunities to pause, reflect and engage with faith, deepening their understanding of themselves, others and God.

In addition, the report celebrates a pastoral team that acts swiftly to provide robust and targeted early support for pupils with SEND and those considered vulnerable, with tailored provision regularly reviewed to ensure each pupil’s individual needs are met.

Dr Sarah Clark, CEO of the Derby Diocesan Academy Trust, said: “Congratulations to everyone at William Gilbert on this outstanding SIAMS report.

“It is clear that Christian values are lived out daily across the school and that pupils and staff are given every opportunity to grow and flourish. “This school is a shining example of faith in action, and we are proud of its continued success.”
