Children at Asterdale Primary School in Spondon celebrated this year’s Anti-Bullying Week in vibrant style, donning odd socks, bright yellow jumpers and their biggest smiles to promote kindness, individuality and inclusion.
Taking inspiration from the Anti-Bullying Alliance’s theme of “Power for Good,” the school, part of Odyssey Collaborative Trust, approached the week with a strong focus on friendship. Pupils explored how their own individuality can be used to support and uplift others, with each child encouraged to demonstrate at least one simple act of kindness every day.
Throughout the week, Class Wellbeing Champions kept a keen eye out for moments of empathy shown by their peers, linking the activities to the school’s wider Asters Values. Children also took part in focused class sessions and proudly wore Odd Socks to highlight their unique impact and the power each individual has to create positive change.

The week concluded with enthusiastic fundraising for Children in Need, rounding off a meaningful blend of learning, reflection and community spirit.
Pupils also took part in targeted learning aimed at deepening their understanding of bullying, bystander behaviour and the school’s zero-tolerance approach. This included discussions around how to respond safely and responsibly if they witness unkind behaviour, both in person and online.
Head teacher John O’Leary said: “At Asterdale, we pride ourselves on the excellence of behaviour and relationships across our whole-school community. It is important that pupils have opportunities to share and celebrate everyday acts of kindness, and to understand the profound impact that positive relationships can have on their mental health and wellbeing – especially in an ever-changing world shaped by digital technology and the challenges of cyberbullying.
“Our approach is reflective, considered and responsive to the needs of our pupils. We promote a clear understanding of STOP – Several Times On Purpose – to help children confidently identify and report bullying.
“To further consolidate this learning, we have planned a dedicated whole-school afternoon of friendship activities and anti-bullying education, reinforcing our message loud and clear: Asterdale is a no-bully school, with no bystanders and no excuses.”
