PUPILS at a Derby school have taken the lead in fundraising, with school parliament representatives organising a fun and inclusive dress-up day to support Children in Need.
During a recent meeting at The Bemrose Primary School, the representatives discussed how to support this year’s appeal and made sure the event would allow every child to take part in a way that felt comfortable.
They agreed on a dress down theme, giving pupils plenty of choice – from non-school uniform and Pudsey clothing to pyjamas or full fancy dress – making it an inclusive event where everyone could join in, with each pupil asked to contribute £1 to take part.
Year 3 pupil and parliament representative, Tiwa Babatunde, said: “We decided that we would all come in non-school uniform for Children in Need because we want to help children who go without or might need money to support them.
“Not only does it make children who need help happy, it also makes us feel happy that we’ve done something kind for somebody who might need it.
“We talked in our parliament meeting about making sure everyone could be themselves and dress how they wanted to – some have come in fancy dress and some have come in pyjamas.
“Each representative was in charge of telling their own class and making sure that everyone who took part brought £1 in. I felt really proud to see that everybody joined in.”
The school raised an impressive £400 for Children in Need. This adds to the many charity initiatives pupils support throughout the year, including their Harvest food collections.
On the same day, the school also opened its doors to welcome prospective parents for an open event. The catchment continues to grow, with families travelling from across the area, including from as far as Mackworth.
Bemrose is also one of the few Derby schools offering continuous education from age 4 in Reception through to age 18 in Sixth Form – a rare feature that provides long-term consistency and a strong sense of community for families.
Headteacher Jason Pass said: “I am incredibly proud of how the school parliament decided to organise this year’s Children in Need fundraising themselves. They showed real enthusiasm and great leadership in making sure everyone could take part.
“I am also proud of how welcoming and inclusive our school feels.
“I want children to be safe, happy, successful and it’s wonderful to see that reflected in everything we do.
“Seeing our pupils come together like this really highlights the strong, caring community we have at The Bemrose School.”
