Pupils from a Derby school were given an insight into democracy in action during a visit to the Houses of Parliament – where they were greeted by Derby North MP, Catherine Atkinson.

Twenty-one pupils from The Bemrose School, in Uttoxeter Road, travelled to London to explore the country’s iconic political landmarks, including the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

During a guided tour of Westminster, the students discovered fascinating facts about Parliament and democracy and took part in an interactive workshop on the importance of petitions.

Year 13 student, Kader said: “Visting the Houses of Parliament really brought what I have learnt in school to life, it was truly incredible and seeing how small the House of Commons really is, shocked me.

“I would recommend it to anyone who gets the opportunity to go, to seize their moment and see just how amazing it is.”

Derby North MP, Catherine Atkinson, said: “It was a pleasure to meet the students from The Bemrose School and show them how Parliament works. They asked some brilliantly insightful questions and it was fantastic to see their enthusiasm.”

The experience linked closely to the school’s ambitious careers programme, encouraging students to consider how politics and democracy influence the world of work and the opportunities available to them beyond education.

Careers lead Claire Amos and a handful of pupils were also recently invited by the East Midlands Combined County Authority to take part in discussions around the launch of the New Inclusive Growth Commission Report, presented by Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward.

During the discussion, Claire Amos and the pupils shared their insights on careers and opportunities within the city, highlighting the importance of preparing young people for the workplace and contributing ideas on how local initiatives can support students’ futures.

Claire Amos said: “I have felt incredibly proud by the way the pupils have represented the school in both of these events. I was impressed by the way they asked insightful questions and had a good understanding of the topics at hand.

“As a careers professional, I was proud to attend this dynamic growth event, and even more proud of the pupils who accompanied me.

“They asked insightful and thought-provoking questions, made a strong contribution to group discussions, and represented themselves with confidence throughout.

The final report brings together fresh ideas for skills, health, housing, and transport aimed at helping people across Derby, Derbyshire, Nottingham, and Nottinghamshire access better jobs, opportunities and stronger communities. The Inclusive Growth Commission’s work reflects a shared commitment to creating an inclusive and prosperous future for the region.

The school has also received national recognition for their forward-thinking careers Programme, which was recently featured on ITV. The news crew visited The Bemrose School to interview Claire Amos about the extensive work experience opportunities offered to pupils within the school.

Each year, more than 250 students take part in placements with leading employers, gaining vital skills and experience to prepare them for life beyond education. ITV also followed Head Boy, Dario, as he began his placement with technology specialists Barron McCann – shining a light on the strength of the school’s employer partnerships and commitment to preparing young people for their future careers.

Head teacher Neil Wilkinson said: “Together, we’re helping our students discover what’s possible – opening doors, building confidence and inspiring them to shape their own futures.

“We’re incredibly proud of the way our pupils engage with opportunities like these, whether that’s contributing to important regional discussions about skills and growth or visiting Parliament to see democracy in action.

“It’s all part of our commitment to helping every student realise their potential and understand the many paths available to them beyond school.”
