Aspiring computer scientists from Lees Brook Academy were given a tour of a leading tech company and learned about the different careers available in the field.

A group of Year 10 students from the school in Chaddesden were taken to Barron McCann Limited in Derby on June 20 as part of the school’s work to link careers into the curriculum.
They were given presentations from a variety of employees at the firm, which informed them about the jobs available in the company and the pathways that led to their employment.

Steve Smith, Lead for Careers at Lees Brook Academy, part of the Archway Learning Trust, said: “This was part of our careers programme in which we attempt to get all students at least one experience in a workplace.

“In addition, we try to link with companies who can offer links that meet the curriculum being delivered by subjects.  This is a successful way of bringing the curriculum to life and for students to understand why they are learning specific knowledge and skills and how these transfer to the world of work.

“A huge thank you to Lucy Laughton at Barron McCann for helping to arrange the visit.”

Lucy, who also volunteers for mock interviews with school pupils across the city and county, said it was an honour for Barron McCann to be a part of the event.

She said: “It is great to be working in partnership with Lees Brook Academy and we thoroughly enjoyed welcoming the Computer Science students to Barron McCann where they enjoyed a tour of the premises, and IT related activities.”

If any other companies are interested in working with Lees Brook Academy on their careers offering, they can contact Mr Smith on the school’s number, 01332 671723.
