PUPILS from a Derby school experienced first-hand the wonders of science with a trip to the Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham.
Sixty Year 4 pupils from The Bemrose School, in Uttoxeter Road, took part in interactive workshops where they learned about explosive liquids and made their own “emulsion” paint, participated in activities that brought to life moving and changing solids, liquids and gases and created their own mini-typhoon.
The trip was funded by DTSA; a not-for-profit organisation that funds trips for young people so that every child has the opportunity to experience a school trip. It works with more than 1,100 schools across the East Midlands and provides training for teachers.
James Dachter, assistant head teacher at The Bemrose School’s primary phase, said: “This trip really brought science to life for the pupils, and they had a brilliant time taking part in the experiments.
“It was a hands-on experience for them, and we know that they got a lot out of it.
“This fits in with what they have been learning in class and we are so grateful to DTSA for funding this trip and giving our pupils this opportunity. It would not have been possible without them.”
The Year 4 pupils have been learning about Extreme Earth in geography and this fitted in with the visit to the centre. The trip included a fire zone where children learned about the uses of heat from the earth’s core and a steel making show where they found out more about mining and the transformation of materials.
There was also an air zone where the youngsters created their own twister and earth zone where they found out more about the layers of the earth and how fault lines form.
A spokesperson for the DTSA said: “At the heart of what DTSA is about is exploring the best education for all children in all schools. After an initial survey with local schools, DTSA found that most school trips are still not going ahead due to funding restrictions and parents being unable to fill that funding gap.
“At DTSA we therefore decided to use some of our charitable reserves to make these trips happen and ensure that those school trip memories were able to happen. We have so far funded around 30 trips and over 400 children to achieve this.”
