BUDDING journalists, teachers and doctors have been gaining valuable work experience as part of their personal development.
Pupils at The Bemrose School, in Uttoxeter Road, have been learning about the world of work with Derby businesses such as Penguin PR, primary schools across the city and even a local pharmacy.
Those in school years 10 – aged 14 and 15 – and year 12 (16 and 17-year-olds) have spent the week finding out if their chosen career really is for them.
Seventeen-year-old Madison Capewell, a talented poet with aspirations of studying journalism at the University of Derby, enjoyed time working at Penguin PR. During her work experience, she visited award-winning science and health firm SureScreen to learn more about the important work that they do, and view the facilities.
“My time at Penguin PR gave me a massive insight into a future career in journalism,” said Madison, “the team at Penguin PR are all former journalists and they gave me tips on my writing style, how to interview people and exactly what makes a good story.
“I personally feel like this experience will also help me with my studies later when I enrol into university.”
Another pupil who took part in work experience at The Bemrose School’s primary phase said that the experience had helped boost her confidence.
She said: “My confidence is growing and working in a primary school has confirmed for me that I want to be a teacher.”
All pupils from Years 7 through to Year 13 receive careers sessions and have access to free impartial careers information and guidance, and employer encounters with local businesses including Lubrizol, Rolls-Royce and the Royal Navy.
Claire Amos, careers lead at The Bemrose School, said: “We are very proud of what we can offer students here with meaningful activities created throughout each term including mock interviews, CV Workshops and enterprise days.
“Engagement with businesses and local employers is key to the success of our careers programme and we are lucky to have, over the past academic year alone, welcomed the BBC, Royal Navy and those working on the HS2 project at nearby Lichfield to school.”
“We pride ourselves on giving our young people the best experiences when it comes to careers.”
