Notts Bad Movie Club founders return to Annie’s with a new night for good films

08/03/2023

THE organisers of a smash-hit club which screens some of Hollywood’s worst movies have set up a brand new spin-off event – celebrating films that are really quite good instead.

Friends Gareth Winterman, Will Bailey and Chris Barnes, who launched the Notts Bad Movie Club last year, are responding to public demand by holding the first-ever meeting of its sister event, the Notts Good Movie Club.

Taking place at Annie’s Burger Shack in Broadway this Friday, the event is already a sell-out, with the crowd drawn to the double delights of BASEketball and South Park: The Movie, accompanied by burgers, beers and a few surprises.

The Notts Bad Movie Club was an instant hit when it first took place last year, with a double-bill of video-game inspired films Mortal Kombat and Streetfighter rolling back the years.

Its meetings are held every two months and every one is a sell-out thanks to the chance to glory in the terrible special effects, dodgy acting and questionable scripts of films such as Anaconda, Flash Gordon and Troll 2, where the audience are encouraged to shout out the lines or laugh at the action.

The Notts Good Movie Club is being presented in the same spirit with the difference being that the films – at least in the opinion of the founders – are classics for good reason.

Although BASEketball had a mixed reaction when it was released in 1998, it has earned a loyal following among fans thanks to its mix of comedy and sport, as well as starring roles for Trey Parker and Matt Stone – the writers behind South Park: The Movie, which is a feature-length version of the anarchic cartoon TV series of the same name.

Club organiser Will Bailey said: “Notts Bad Movie Club has just gone stratospheric since we launched it at Annie’s Burger Shack last year and we’ve been thinking about introducing a good movie version for a while.

“We’re really pleased to be launching the event on Friday with two films that are proper classics. The idea of the Notts Good Movie Club is that although we don’t have the aspect of laughing at the effects or the terrible plotline, there’s still plenty of opportunity for people to get involved and shout out the lines – or even sing the songs.

“Seeing South Park: The Movie on its release day in 1999 is still one of my favourite cinema experiences so I’m excited to be bringing it back to the big screen with a room full of people. We’re over the moon to announce that we have three celebrity videos lined up to show everyone, featuring the cast of both films.

“There are so many films that fit into the good movie category and we’re looking forward to showing them over the next few months, but the real joy is getting people together to enjoy films in the company of people who love them just as much as they do.”
