Pupils at a Derbyshire primary school have been learning about the British monarchy, Queen Elizabeth and the Royal Family ahead of the Platinum Jubilee next month.
Youngsters at Horsley Woodhouse School – part of the Embark Federation, which oversees 15 schools in the county – have also been busy planning a party on the school field to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign.
The school has been decorated in Union Jack bunting while children have been drawing portraits of the Queen and sharing stories.
Headteacher Mrs Parmjit Atwal said: “We are very excited about celebrating this historical moment.
“The children throughout the school have been learning all about the Royal Family and planning how they’re going to mark the occasion.
“We will be having a typically British picnic on the school field after the Jubilee, where we will eat delicious cakes and sandwiches.
“On the day of the Jubilee picnic, we will host various craft events in our classrooms where children can make their own crowns, bunting and flags.”
Year Two pupil Axel is a fan of the Queen. He said: “I like the Queen. I think she’s very kind and popular.
“If I was king, I would listen to my favourite music all day and would go out and wave at the people in the street.
“If I was invited to Buckingham Palace, I would make sure I said hello to the soldiers who guard the house. They do a very important job.”
Classmate Liv added: “If I was Queen, I would help people. I would like to live at Buckingham Palace; it looks like a good place to live and has 17 bathrooms. I’d like to jump on all of the beds in the bedroom!”
All 15 schools which are part of the Embark Federation – from Heath Primary School in Chesterfield to Waingroves Primary near Ripley – have been learning about Queen Elizabeth. Trust Leader Matt Crawford added: “It’s very important to us that our children learn of the British Values and that we celebrates such a momentous occasion.
“I’m very proud of how our schools have bene decorated for the Platinum Jubilee and how each one is choosing to celebrate in their own unique way.”
