Families in Derby enjoy hot meal at The Bemrose School, thanks to Iceland School Supper Club

19/12/2022

Families in Derby were treated to a hot dinner and hospitality at a city school, thanks to a nationwide initiative from supermarket Iceland Foods.

More than 60 people enjoyed pasta and garlic bread, jacket potatoes and beans at The Bemrose School’s primary phase after Iceland’s pledge to support families through the cost-of-living crisis this winter.

The nationwide scheme, run in partnership with charity ParentKind, will see families, children and staff from a selection of schools across the UK come together to deliver hot meals for their local community. All food and drink were donated by Iceland and the school PTA.

Claire Zolkiewicz, of The Bemrose School, said: “The supermarket offered 10 lots of £200 prizes and we were successful in winning one for our community. The initiative aims to feed people hot meals who may otherwise not get one each day, or those that sacrifice feeding themselves for the sake of their family.”

Kate Beecroft, headteacher of The Bemrose School’s primary phase, said: “We did leaflet drops in our community before the event and it was good to see so many people.

“Times are difficult right now, and the weather has been bitterly cold lately, so it was a great opportunity for everyone to come together and enjoy a hot meal.”

Recent research revealed that 53 per cent of people across the UK plan to reduce or cut out hot meals over the coming months.

Iceland also shared a range of recipe ideas and instructions on how to use more energy efficient cooking methods such as air fryers, slow cookers and microwaves.

Managing director Richard Walker said: “It’s our pleasure to be supporting the wonderful parent-teacher association (PTA) in The Bemrose School. With so many people all over the country having to sacrifice hot meals because they can’t afford the energy, it’s these kinds of acts that will help people through the toughest time of the year.”
