Leadership expert Kul Mahay says retention of staff is key to success for organisations in 2023

13/12/2022

A top leadership expert believes that creating cultures that focus on staff retention and confidence will be critical for most organisations in 2023.

With further industrial action planned across both the public and private sector – and more than one million working days lost to strike action by the end of December, according to the Financial Times – Kul Mahay says that creating healthy cultures will be key to success in 2023 for many industries.

“Organisations are made up of people with varying complexities, and we need to embrace this,” said Kul, who has worked with NHS Trusts, oil companies and the police on making improvements.

“Looking after our people by creating cultures where people feel valued and psychologically safe is probably the number one priority for a lot of organisations right now.

“Yes, we are seeing people taking industrial action across many sectors, including education, rail industry and health – but it isn’t all about pay. People want better working conditions, including leadership styles.

“I have worked with some organisations where staff have repeatedly told me that the organisation’s ‘command and control’ leadership style over the past two years has left them feeling mistrusted and devalued.

“There is a real need for human-centric leaders. Leadership is about building relationships based on trust and that needs to be the focus for 2023.”

Kul is busy preparing for the new year, which will see him launch his leadership public speaking course – Create & Speak.

He said: “We are really excited to be launching this programme next year after completely redesigning it. It is now one of the highest accredited public speaking programmes designed especially for leaders on the market, with both CPD accreditation and accreditation by the Institute of Leadership and Management.

“Successful delegates will receive membership to the institute and access to over 400-hours worth of leadership development content. I’m committed to making leadership communication a priority for organisations in 2023.”

Kul is launching his accredited leadership programme for young people and is also set to host the first Ignite Your Inner Potential personal leadership event in three years.

Ignite Your Inner Potential was one of the fastest-growing personal leadership events until the pandemic hit the UK. Kul is now determined to bring this event back to put the Midlands at the heart of positive communities in the UK.

“It will be a celebration of different inspirational people coming together after a difficult few years,” said Kul, “and I will be choosing five people who have attended our Create & Speak course to stand on the stage and share their experiences.

“It is great to be holding events again, and I’m looking forward to a very busy 2023.”

The Create & Speak course will cost just £500 for next year only, as it is the first time it is being held in its new form.

“I’m genuinely excited about delivering this programme for leaders,” said Kul, “we underestimate the need for effective communication skills for leaders but they are critical, to say the least.”
