Outstanding GCSE Results at Derby Grammar School

26/08/2022

Derby Grammar School is celebrating an outstanding GCSE results day. 20% of scores were the top grade 9, and 53% of all results were grades 9-7.

Head teacher Paul Logan said the pupils richly deserved the high scores which showed the true resilience and hard work of the pupils during a challenging period due to Covid.

Mr Logan said” “This year group is truly ‘the year who can’. They have maintained an unswerving commitment to their academic work, and focused on achieving the grades they need to take the next steps of their educational journeys. We look forward to welcoming them back to some very exciting opportunities in our 6th Form where they can expect a calendar packed with talks from inspiring speakers, and the chance to gain invaluable experiences outside the classroom serving the local community. Social events will help balance the high academic demands of DGS 6th Form life too as the school focuses on wellbeing as part of our superb individual pastoral care.’

One pupil receiving straight 9 grades for his GCSEs was Matthew Jackson. He has a keen interest in geopolitics and has already amassed more than 22,000 followers to his geopolitics Instagram account.

“I just can’t express how happy I am after all the work that has gone in to it,” he said. Matthew, 16, is now planning to stay on at Derby Grammar School to study French, German and Politics at A level. He will also join the school on a trip to Tanzania next year which he is fundraising for. It will be the first time the school has been back to the country in two years due to Covid.

“It’s really special I can be on the first trip since Covid,” said Matthew. “I’m really excited because I know other pupils who have been in the past say it was life changing. I am going to be using it as an opportunity to crowd fund and am developing how best to do this.”

Also earning straight 9s in their GCSEs was Rohail Moazzam. “I am really happy,” he said. “I would really like to go into medicine.”

His mum, Farah, said her son had worked very hard for his results and also praised the school.

“DGS have been great, especially during Covid,” she said. The support the teachers gave has been absolutely lovely.”

Also pleased with his results was Laurie Kirk who received 9s in all his science subjects and is planning to study Psychology at A-level, along with Chemistry and either Biology or Business.

“I’m really interested in psychiatrics and also medicine as my mum is a GP,” he said. His mum, Anna, has had a particularly stressful summer as her elder daughter, Josie, collected her A-level results from the school last week, achieving straight As.

Other outstanding individual performances included, Awais Ali who achieved 7 grade 9s, Ibrahim Ali 3 Grade 9s and 5 grade 8s, Amrit Rangi 7 grade 9’s and 2 grade 8s and Jia Huang 5 grade 9s and 4 grade 8s.
