Residents in Mackworth are being offered access to a brand-new fitness centre with state-of-the-art equipment thanks to Derby Grammar School.
The gym, which opened this month, is professionally equipped and boasts free weights, a TRX suspension trainer, spin bikes, cross trainer, treadmill and rowing machines.
While Derby Grammar School’s Sports Centre, on Richmond Road, has improved facilities for the school’s own pupils, head teacher Paul Logan also wanted it to be available for the community.
“The gym is a great addition to our sports offering at Derby Grammar School and I know our pupils have been excited to use it,” he said.
“Health and fitness are very important to us and that is why we wanted to open the gym to the wider community, so they can also enjoy the health benefits. With free parking and a pay-as-you-go system, with no contracts, we hope the centre will be popular with everyone.
“We’ve been delighted to welcome local residents in to use it within its first week of opening and we are getting some lovely feedback from people in Mackworth.”
Mr Logan and Sports Centre Manager, Rob Russell welcomed Laura West, Head of Athlete Development at the Derbyshire Institute of Sport, to officially open the gym.
She said: “We at the Derbyshire Institute of Sport work with many talented young athletes who go on to do great things and we are already helping a couple of Derby Grammar School youngsters in our performance prep squad programme.
“This great gym, complemented by the sports hall and pitches at Derby Grammar School Sports Centre, is the kind of place where the love of sport can be developed and nurtured.
“It is supporting sport for everyone, and I wish everyone connected with it all the best for its future.”
Della Louch, Chair Derbyshire Netball Association and Katie West, Co-Ordinator at Move More Derby also visited the fitness centre to celebrate its opening.
The gym is available to the community seven days a week and costs just £4 per hour to use or £3 for concessions, with no need for a contract or pre-payment. There is free parking and an area to get drinks and recharge after a workout.
Opening hours are Monday to Thursday, 12-2pm and 6-10pm. Friday 12-2pm and 4-10pm, Saturday and Sunday – 9am-12.30pm.
