YOUNGSTERS from a Chesterfield infant school have been celebrating the life of British Army veteran and fundraiser Captain Sir Tom Moore, and remembering our fallen heroes.
Twelve children from Whittington Moor Nursery and Infant Academy – part of the Cavendish Learning Trust – paid their respects at the town’s annual Remembrance Day service, which began with a church service in the town before a procession and wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial opposite the Town Hall.
In the run-up to the event, pupils at the Scarsdale Road school painted pictures of poppies, learned about Armistice Day and the heroics of Captain Tom, the former British Army officer who made headlines in 2020, during the pandemic, when he raised thousands of pounds for charity ahead of his 100th birthday.

Head teacher Lauren Kay said: “Our class assemblies have focused on British values and democracy. We have talked about why Captain Tom was so inspirational and why we have Armistice Day every year.
“I have been exceptionally proud of how our children have contributed to this subject and it was a joy seeing them representing our school and paying their respects during the Remembrance Day service.
“Community is important to us here at Whittington Moor Nursery and Infant Academy and, as we start to welcome visitors back into school after the covid lockdowns, we will look to have representation at more events like this.”
As well as expanding the provisions provided by the school to its community – Whittington Moor Nursery and Infant Academy have plans to invite organisations into school to talk to parents about healthy eating and debt management – the school is set to host an Open Day for parents wishing to send their children to the school next September.
The event will take place on Wednesday, November 24 at 3.30pm.
“We have an excellent relationship with nearby Cavendish Junior School, which was recently graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted – and there are exciting plans in place to build on this,” added Miss Kay.
“We are looking at ‘buddy’ schemes between children at the two schools, sharing of facilities and best practice.
“We pride ourselves on the fact that we know all of our children – and their families – and we enrol toddlers from the age of two upwards at our school.
“Staff ensure that every child who leaves Whittington Moor at the age of seven has experienced the simple things in life, such as posting a letter at the post box and sewing a button onto a coat. These skills build resilience and develop confidence.
“We’re continuing our commitment to outdoor learning with the expansion of our Forest School provision and, hopefully, we will receive the essential accreditation from the Forest School Alliance in 2022.
“We want to ensure that the school experience for our children is a magical time.”
