A DERBY artisan bakery has resolved a supply issue which means it can sell boxes of four doughnuts again – even though it has meant sacrificing its distinctive bright pink branding.
A nationwide cardboard box shortage has meant that doughnut makers Project D has been unable to sell its hugely popular products in boxes of four for the last two months.
But fans of the brightly coloured and extravagantly topped treats will be delighted to learn that the four packs will finally be available again from November 9 – if only in plain boxes instead of the usual pink packaging.

A DERBY artisan bakery has resolved a supply issue which means it can sell boxes of four doughnuts again – even though it has meant sacrificing its distinctive bright pink branding.
Since the end of August, the hand-decorated doughnuts have only been available in boxes of six simply because the bakery, based in Spondon, has been unable to purchase packaging.
Strategy director Jacob Watts said: “Since Project D launched, we have always listened to our customers, so it has been really frustrating to know that they wanted to carry on buying boxes of four doughnuts – and we just couldn’t offer them.
“We have tried just about every cardboard box supplier in the land but there is just a huge cardboard shortage across the world, and we haven’t been able to get any smaller boxes, despite our best efforts.
“Obviously our branding is massively important to us, but to bring our boxes back to the nation we’ve had to take a step back. For now, our boxes will be going out plain – with a Project D sticker on the front.”
A shortage of pulp used to make cardboard boxes has affected retailers across the world, while a move to more online deliveries during the pandemic meant cardboard was even more in demand.
Project D’s boxes are biodegradable and compostable and the boxes of four will be launched at the same time as the company recruits for 10 additional delivery drivers.
Jacob added: “The pay at Project D is significantly higher than average for working in the food industry.
“We also have a great working schedule that offers sociable working hours, something that’s not too common in the hospitality and food industry. We also have a lot of fun – we don’t call our bakery the Dream Factory for nothing.”
