Derby charity Sam’s Superheroes need YOUR help to make first fundraiser a huge success

11/11/2021

THE organisers of a brand-new charity launched in memory of a little boy who died from a one-in-a-million condition are appealing for donations of cakes and sponsorship for their inaugural events.

Rachel Liew has unveiled Sam’s Superheroes in tribute to her five-year-old son Sam who died after a series of catastrophic seizures, an exceptionally rare reaction to a run of the mill virus.

Sam was a perfectly healthy little boy before he developed the condition in March this year, which is called Febrile Infection Related Epilepsy Syndrome (FIRES).

Rachel Liew has unveiled Sam’s Superheroes in tribute to her five-year-old son Sam who died after a series of catastrophic seizures, an exceptionally rare reaction to a run of the mill virus.

Now Rachel is planning two fundraising events which are designed to increase awareness of FIRES and help fund activities around Sam’s love of the outdoors, nature and animals.

The trustees of Sam’s Superheroes intend to begin their fundraising activities running a craft and cake stall at the Mickleover Christmas Festival on November 28 and are appealing for donations of bakes to sell at the event.

They are also planning a family singalong Christmas carol concert, complete with a brass band, at Vicarage Park, in Mickleover, on December 19.

The event will begin with a lantern procession along Vicarage Road and an outdoor projector will show photographs of Sam during the concert, which is also designed to be a celebration of his life.

At the end of the event, there will be a short low-noise firework display and Rachel hopes a local business may make a contribution towards the cost of the event.

She said: “We would really appreciate any donations of cakes for both events as we plan to sell refreshments at the carol service too.

“We have submitted our small road closure application for the lantern procession, so we hope it will be very family friendly and atmospheric.

“At the end of the carol service we are going to sing a special song we wrote for Sam set to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and then we’ll finish with a low-noise family and animal friendly five-minute firework display – which will be sending all our love to Sam in the sky.

“I hope this will be a lovely way for those for knew Sam to remember him but also a time for other people to remember their loved ones too, especially at Christmas.

“We would really appreciate some sponsorship for this if possible and we’ll have a little programme so we could print logos by way of thank you.

“We’re also looking for some printed Sam’s Superheroes mementoes or keepsakes so if anyone can help us out we would be so, so grateful.”

The Christmas Carol Concert will take place between 6pm and 7pm at Vicarage Park in Mickleover, DE3 OED and the procession will set off at 5.30pm from Mickleover Community Centre, next to the library.

If you would like to bake a cake, or support with sponsorship of the event or printed keepsakes and balloons please contact Sam’s Superheroes by emailing [email protected] or contact us on Facebook @TeamSamsSuperheroes
