Results at The Bemrose School have followed the upward trend of recent years with gains in almost every subject, showing the rising trajectory of the school.
Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, staff at the Uttoxeter New Road school were expecting this year’s GCSE results to increase across the board, in line with improvements over the last five years.
And, thanks to a series of measures implemented both at the school and across the city, Bemrose is celebrating a set of results in which many pupils even exceeded teacher’s expectations.
Year on year improvements were made in almost every subject area, including maths and science, with the average grade in every subject higher than last year.
Executive head teacher Neil Wilkinson said the improvements were due to a multitude of reasons including the investment in the school’s buildings and resources, as well as the stability and enthusiasm of staff.
And he acknowledged that the work carried out collectively through the Opportunity Area funding had also improved outcomes for young people in the school.
“We are absolutely delighted with results this year, which are absolutely in line with what we predicted prior to Covid, based on this year’s cohort and the improving journey of the school,” said Mr Wilkinson.

“This is a day of celebration and we applaud the achievements of all our students at all ability levels, after what has been a challenging end to the school year and an unpredictable summer.
“The vast majority of pupils have been successful in securing their preferred pathway and I wish our students the very best with their next stages of life.
“This success would not be possible without the dedication and support from every member of staff at the school, and I would also like to thank them for the positive impacts they have had on our students.
“Staff used their professional integrity to make a realistic judgement of our pupils’ abilities. The fact that in several subjects the results produced centrally by algorithm were slightly better than the centre-assessed grades shows just how diligent our marking was, meaning Bemrose students can be confident their grades accurately reflect their abilities.
“It means that our pupils can be assured that whatever their next steps are they will thrive and be comfortable that they have not been set-up to fail, but given the best possible start on their individual journeys.”
