A luxury bakery is putting the Merry into Christmas with a sweet alternative to the traditional pudding – a festive range of giant doughnuts which are large enough to serve 12 people.
Project D, based in Derby, which delivers to doorsteps from Leeds to Birmingham is offering the Merry Mega Doughnut – which is a whopping 30cm wide – for just four days, to ensure the tasty treats are fresh for Christmas Day.
With a range of toppings and flavours, including one filled with brandy buttercream, the showstopping doughnuts are completely encased in icing to ensure they stay moist.
Frosty the Doughman is a massive vanilla fudge doughnut, topped with Cadbury Buttons, Matchmakers and Rolos. While Santa Bae Bae is glazed in white chocolate and topped with a vanilla frosted beard, a Dairy Milk belt and Malteser buttons.

The Biscoff Banger is glazed in salted caramel, covered in Christmas sprinkles and Lotus Biscoff biscuits while Project Pudding is glazed in milk chocolate and vanilla fudge with the option to choose fillings including Nutella or Chocolate Orange.
Project D co-director Max Poynton said: “We asked around the bakery and office and in our team of 50 plus people only one person actually liked Christmas pudding – yet there really isn’t a good alternative.
“So, we decided to put a Project D spin on the old favourite, making a doughnut which looks festive enough to be a centrepiece, is big enough to share with the whole family and tasty enough to put a smile on everyone’s face.

“Our last delivery date is Christmas Eve and the online booking slots are filling up incredibly quickly – it seems that for Christmas 2020 people are happy to leave the heavy Christmas pud behind and have a light and fluffy doughnut – with all the trimmings – instead.”
This month Project D moved into a brand-new bakery in Spondon which is 11 times larger than its previous premises, allowing the company to triple its production.
Bakers change the flavours of its doughnuts every six weeks and also offer a vegan range. They currently deliver to doorsteps across Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Birmingham, Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Yorkshire and intend to add routes in Manchester and London next year.
