Derby school St Giles thanks key workers who have kept the school spick and span during academic year

27/07/2020

THE head teacher at a Derby special school has praised the keyworkers who have gone above and beyond in recent months.

Clive Lawrence, executive head teacher at St Giles School, in Hampshire Road, has paid tribute to the cleaning staff – caretaker Craig Jackson, Jane Drew, Jane Crawley, Lisa Roome, Jennifer Hamilton and Gillian Clarke – who have worked tirelessly to keep his school clean during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Mr Lawrence, whose mum, Angela, was a cleaner at a Derby school, said: “As we come towards the end of this academic year, I wanted to thank an amazing group of keyworkers.

“During these unprecedented times Craig, our caretaker, and our cleaning staff have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our school as safe as possible for staff and pupils.

“At times they’ve been really stretched, as they haven’t always had a full cleaning team available. They’ve also had to cover our main school site in Hampshire Road and our brand-new centre, The Hive.

“They have worked endless extra hours since the coronavirus pandemic first began to put in place some additional cleaning measures. They do a tremendous job.”

St Giles, the city’s only special primary school, were praised for going ‘above and beyond’ at the height of the Coronavirus pandemic by setting up a dedicated mobile phone number for the school’s NHS nurse and a link-up to translators, so that they could support families where English isn’t their first language.

Staff also worked around the clock to create and deliver learning resource packs for pupils.
