Staff at Derbyshire school show their talent by singing Foo Fighters hit during Shirebrook Academy’s virtual talent contest

21/07/2020

Talented performers at a Derbyshire school got their chance to shine despite the coronavirus lockdown when their annual end-of-term talent show took place online for the first time in its history.

Shirebrook Academy, which has held its annual Shirebrook’s Got Talent show for the past 10 years, took the decision to host the event online after social distancing meant that all but a handful of students have been studying at home since the end of March.

The show, which is usually held in the school’s auditorium, brings the Academy’s school year to a close by showcasing the talents of singers, dancers, magicians and other performers.

This year, students recorded their routines at home on their mobile phones and sent them in so that they could be viewed on YouTube.

Staff also filmed a video of themselves singing the Foo Fighters’ song Times Like These, which has become an anthem summing up a message of hope in amongst the hardships of living under the threat of the pandemic.

This year, the performances also included art displays, a showcase of the best examples of student’s work completed during lockdown and even a ventriloquist’s act, although, unlike in other years, nobody was declared the overall winner.

The event, which was broadcast on the school’s YouTube channel, was organised by Adam Case, Natalie Mehrotra-Hughes and James Edwards who all who insisted that the show must go on, despite the restrictions.

Adam said: “Shirebrook’s Got Talent has become a hugely popular event to celebrate the end of the school year and so we were determined that this year’s performers didn’t miss out because of the coronavirus.

“We had lots of excellent entries, many from students who surprised everyone with their talents and who clearly have been working extremely hard on their acts.

“Our staff video also went down very well and demonstrated what excellent singers many of our staff are. It’s a wonderful song and very fitting, and it really sums up the emotions and the feeling of hope after what has been an incredibly challenging time for everybody.”
