Some things in life are a match made in heaven and this summer the biggest buzz in baking is set to be the conut – ice cream cones made with doughnuts.
Hundreds of people turned up to try the eye-catching indulgence at the launch of Project Whippy on Saturday, with 30 minute queues all day and more than 100 conuts being snapped up every hour.
The food fusion, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, is being sold from a custom-made traditional ice cream van, complete with registration W99 HPY, which will be positioned at locations across the city.
It is the brainchild of the entrepreneurs behind Project Doughnut, which makes artisan handcrafted doughnuts and delivers them direct to the door or at pop-up locations across the region.

First in the queue to try a conut were Stuart Bell and his 10-year-old daughter Niamh Bell who travelled from Loughborough to get their hands on the new creation.
Stuart said: “We got here about 35 minutes before Project Whippy started serving and we were really excited to be the first to try the conut – which is absolutely delicious and worth every second in the car to get here.
“It’s definitely a winning combination and I can see this being the next big thing to sweep the UK – who wants a boring ice cream cone and regular toppings when you can have one of these?”

And the trendy food hybrids don’t stop there; Project Whippy is also selling doughnuts filled with ice cream, which are warm on the outside and frozen in the centre.
Project Whippy co-owner Max Poynton said: “The feedback we got on Saturday was amazing – we knew our invention was pretty amazing, but to see so many people with massive smiles on their faces enjoying their first conut was really exciting.
“People loved the ice cream van and were taking selfies in front of it all day and the two toppings on offer were really successful. What’s exciting is that there is so much more to come – we have an fantastic range of toppings that Project Doughnut customers have come to know and love and they are all waiting to go on top of a conut.”

Project Whippy’s owners are hoping the venture will be as successful as its sister business, Project Doughnut, which served up its brightly-coloured creations to Love Island contestants and the Royal household in its first year of trading.
The ice cream conuts have already been making waves on social media with Project Whippy gaining almost 6,000 followers on Instagram in less than a week. While a post inviting followers to suggest Project Whippy’s first location received 500 suggestions.
Max added: “We hoped conuts would be the hit of the summer and if Saturday was anything to go by, we’re is going to be very busy indeed. We completely sold out on Saturday, we literally couldn’t serve them quickly enough, and could have sold twice the amount if we’d have them.”
