Is it a doughnut? Is it an ice cream? No, it’s a conut! Project D launch new dessert

13/07/2020

The company behind the delicious doughnuts that have been delivered to doorsteps across the county are launching their new venture this weekend – ice cream cones made with doughnuts.

The eye-catching indulgence – called the conut – means that doughnut lovers and ice cream fans will no longer have to choose between their two favourite treats thanks to the launch of Project Whippy, a spin off from the entrepreneurs behind Project Doughnut.

The food fusion, believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, is being sold from a custom-made traditional ice cream van which will be positioned at Honest Pizza, on Manor Road, tomorrow (Saturday) between 12pm and 4pm.

And the trendy food hybrids don’t stop there; Project Whippy is also selling doughnuts filled with ice cream, which are warm on the outside and frozen in the centre.

Project Whippy co-owner Max Poynton said: “We’re really excited to announce that the food hybrid of your wildest dreams has just become a reality – the conut is ready to launch.

“We’ve completely kitted out an ice cream van and will be serving Mr Whippy ice cream in a freshly baked doughnut cone, which will be sprinkled with a range of the fantastic toppings that Project Doughnut customers have come to know and love.

“We’ve also bought a heat press machine which allows us to seal a scoop of ice cream inside a doughnut, making it warm on the outside and cold in the middle. We think these two treats will be the hit of the summer.”

Project Whippy’s owners are hoping the venture will be as successful as its sister business, Project Doughnut, which served up its brightly-coloured creations to Love Island contestants and the Royal household in its first year of trading.

The ice cream conuts have already been making waves on social media with Project Whippy gaining almost 6,000 followers on Instagram in less than a week. While a post inviting followers to suggest Project Whippy’s first location received 500 suggestions.

Max added: “We always set out to be an innovative company that was inventive and forward-thinking and although Project D is really popular, we wanted to use our imagination and creativity to come up with another exciting product.

“We have done a lot of research, travelling all over the world to sample doughnuts and look at various techniques, and we take a lot of pride in our creations, so the conut had to be absolutely right before we launched.

“Our conuts are light and airy, free from artificial ingredients and hand decorated in one of our ever growing list of designs and flavours, ensuring there’s something for everyone.”
