Swinton Academy pupils join South Yorkshire Police, Santa and his elves as they deliver handmade Christmas hampers to those in need

CHRISTMAS came early for youngsters from flood-hit Kilnhurst Primary Academy as they received a hamper of brand-new books from students at a Rotherham school.

Each tutor group at Swinton Academy has created a festive hamper featuring homemade gifts and Christmas goodies. They presented their hampers – 30 in total – to the rest of the school during assembly and, on Thursday, they joined members of the Rotherham North NHP South Yorkshire local
policing team
to deliver these to members of the community, who had been
nominated by police officers and other professionals in Swinton.

It is the eighth year in which Swinton Academy have been involved in the gift-giving project.

Recipients included a woman whose husband of 70 years recently passed away and members of the Honeypot Community café in Swinton Civic Hall, who offer a safe and caring place for people of all ages –
particularly those who may feel socially isolated – a place to meet and have a chat.

Last year’s recipients included a WWII veteran who had just celebrated his 100th birthday and a woman whose son had recently passed away.

John Hilton, PE teacher and Year 10 lead at Swinton Academy, has helped to co-ordinate the project with science teacher Callum Wadsworth, who dressed as Santa, and PCSOs Neil Entwistle and Dave Jackson from South Yorkshire Police.

He said: “So much thought went into making the hampers by students at Swinton Academy and it was a joy to accompany staff, pupils and members of the Rawmarsh local policing team as we delivered them.

“In previous years, we’ve had hampers which resemble giant gingerbread houses and Santa’s sleigh – complete with working fairy lights – created by our clever students.

“Before they were delivered, we held a special assembly for each year group where they were presented to the rest of the year. These assemblies are wonderful; you can see just how much thought and care goes into making the hampers.

“It is important that students spend time thinking how they can help and support others at this time of year.

“Every year we do this, we receive so many kind words from recipients who are overwhelmed with the kindness and generosity of staff and students involved.”
