Hat-trick of sporting success for Aston Academy sports teams as they head to Rotherham finals

20/12/2019

A ROTHERHAM secondary school is celebrating sporting success in netball, cricket and football.

Aston Academy, Aughton Road, will have two netball teams representing the school in the Rotherham Finals in 2020 after the Year 10 and Year 11 girls’ teams won all their qualifying games to proceed.

The Year 10 team will be looking to make it a hat-trick of wins in the annual schools’ competition, while Aston’s Year 11 girls’ netball team will be hoping for better fortunes at the tournament. They were denied a second successive Finals win by losing in the qualifying stages, with several key players missing due to injury.

Not to be outdone, the Year 8 boys’ cricket team have secured a place in the South Yorkshire Cup after winning the indoor heats in Rotherham, while the boys’ Year 7, Year 8, Year 9 and Year 10 football teams will compete in the Rotherham Finals and South Yorkshire Cup in 2020 after successfully making it through the qualifying rounds.

James Clarke, head of PE at Aston Academy, said: “It has been a fantastic year of sporting achievement at Aston Academy we are delighted to have so many sports represented in various competitions.

“All the students have worked extremely hard and their commitment and dedication is admirable.”

Earlier this term, Aston Academy celebrated its female sporting achievements by holding a second successive Girl Power Day. Aimed at promoting a positive body image to teenagers, Girl Power Day is inspired by the 2015 Sport England project This Girl Can. Aston Academy and its Year 10 female sports leaders helped to support the running of the event with activities such as curling, dancing and volleyball.
