Parents and children learn together as Derbyshire company Lubrizol organise STEM day for families

05/12/2019

A Belper company threw open its doors to the next generation of scientists and engineers when it hosted a visit from a special group of youngsters – the children of its current staff.

Eleven boys and girls aged between 12 and 15 got to see what their parents do every day when Lubrizol, in Nether Lane, Hazelwood, arranged a tour of the facility and hosted a series of events to showcase their work.

The company runs a comprehensive STEM activity programme every year and the latest visit was organised by its current placement students, who arranged for the youngsters to learn about the different scientific and non-scientific roles across the company in a host of departments including the science labs, finance department and the global communications department.

Eleven sons and daughters of people working at Belper chemical firm Lubrizol got to see what their parents do for a living when the company held a STEM awareness day specially for staff’s children.

For Tim Hollingshurst, the visit was a chance for him to show his son, Luke, 13, what he does for a living as an IS manager for EMEA Network Services at Lubrizol, working hard on the IT side of the business.

Tim’s wife and Luke’s mother, Claire, also works at Lubrizol as a quality systems manager and, although Claire was not working at the company that day, Tim said the visit has helped Luke understand more about his parents’ line of work.

Tim said: “Like many boys his age, Luke wants to be a footballer, but I thoroughly enjoyed showing him what I do at work in the hope that it will show him the options that are open to him.

“I do a lot of STEM work and I really enjoyed the event, because Luke was involved in it and that made it more personal.

“I know that other members of staff whose children came into work felt the same way because not only did it help to inspire and educate them, it was a great way of showing them what we do all day.”
