HUNDREDS of plastic bottles have been turned into a unique and stunning sculpture to mark Armistice Day by students at a South Yorkshire school.
Art, Design and Technology students from Swinton Academy made 3D poppies by cutting off the end of several plastic bottles, which were brought into school. Each one was painted and then fastened to a wooden structure placed outside the Academy main entrance ahead of Armistice Day, on November 11.
It was the pièce de résistance to a week of events at Swinton Academy which took place to mark the annual day of remembrance.
Each year group held special remembrance assemblies where they delivered individual and thought-provoking presentations.

Year 7 leader Katie Duroe presented a poignant remembrance message, Year 8 tutor groups designed and created a colourful display while those in Year 9 reminded students of the sacrifices made by the service men and women in Great Britain and the Commonwealth. Each tutor group member presented an individual poppy they had made with a personalised message of thanks, which were then incorporated into a visual display.
A one-minute silence was impeccably observed on Armistice Day itself.
Rebecca Hibberd, principal at Swinton Academy, said: “We are incredibly proud of our students for all the hard work which they have put into marking Armistice Day.
“The sculptural display has been much admired by staff, students and visitors and the assemblies were thought-provoking and delivered beautifully.”
