Pupils at a Rotherham school learned a lesson about food and hunger across the world and on their doorsteps when they came together to celebrate their harvest festival.

The youngsters at Listerdale Junior Academy found out how what we eat has an effect on farming, the environment, art and the local community as part of the celebrations, which took place at the school, in Beech Avenue, this October.
The school prides itself on the popularity of its harvest festival and it was standing room only inside its hall, with pupils and families crowding in to take part.

It also resulted in a bumper donation to the Rotherham Foodbank, whose volunteers left with dozens of carrier bags full of cans, boxes and packets which were brought in as part of the celebrations and donated to the Grove Road-based charity.
David Simpson, principal of Listerdale Academy, said: “Our harvest festival has always been popular and this year was no exception, so we had to hold two separate events so that everyone in the school could take part.

“We had a fantastic response from our parents, who filled three big tables with their donations, all of which have now been collected by the Rotherham Foodbank.
“The giving food side of harvest festivals has never been more important but the event gave us the chance to incorporate food in their lessons, from the way intensive farming is having an effect on rainforests to how food packaging inspired artists like Andy Warhol.”
