THE new intake of Year 7 pupils at Swinton Academy have been at the Rotherham school for less than a month but plans are currently being put place for next year’s cohort.
Applications for youngsters starting secondary school in September 2020 are now open and Swinton Academy are hosting an open evening for current Years 5 and 6 later this month.
The Rotherham academy are hoping that improved GCSE results for a second successive year, a refurbished technology block, award-winning science project and its various community initiatives can persuade those pupils currently in Year 6 that this is the place to further their education.
Rebecca Hibberd, principal at Swinton Academy, has been in the position for three years. Her previous school was Aston Academy, in Aughton Road, Sheffield.
She is delighted with the progress which the academy has made over the last 12 months.
“We were set challenging targets for the academic year but successfully achieved them all with improved results in English, maths and science,” she said.
“We’re immensely proud of our young adults and the commitment and determination they put into their work.
“Now is an exciting time at Swinton Academy as the new Year 7s begin their education with us and they have a fabulous new technology facilities to enjoy, too.”
The work at Swinton Academy took place during the school holidays by Rotherham-based OP Construction, who specialise in big-build projects in the South Yorkshire area. They operate in sectors as diverse as education and health through to social housing and luxury homes.
“The block is now an inspiring area which will allow our students to be creative and inventive,” added Mrs Hibberd.
As well as working hard on improving Swinton Academy’s performance academically, the academy have also been involved in several community events including a Christmas gift-giving campaign and a charity walk, where they raised money for two Rotherham hospices; St Luke’s Hospice, in Little Common Lane, Sheffield, and Rotherham Hospice as part of the 2019 Master Cutler’s Challenge.
They are working closely with Sheffield Hallam on science and Modern Foreign Languages projects and, in July, they won a national STEM award for their eco-friendly greenhouse.
“Climate change is one of the UK’s most pressing concerns among young people and we’re delighted to be doing our bit to help save the planet here at Swinton,” added Mrs Hibberd.
“Our students, led by our dedicated and talented staff, did the Academy proud and really showed off their brilliance, intelligence and heart. It’s been a real team effort and the pupils are an inspiration.”
