Award-winning Derby restaurant reopens after refurbishment

08/04/2019

A popular buffet restaurant has reopened after a renovation which has seen the introduction of a host of design improvements and more comfortable seating.

COSMO Derby has reopened its doors today following the refit which is described by director Kan Koo as a move to bring the restaurant a step closer to the Far Eastern five-star buffet dining experience that has made it a firm favourite with city diners over the last five years.

The work has included upgrading the lighting all over the restaurant including the installation of lights inspired by Chinese nut fruits, a huge Japanese mural featuring a geisha girl, tactile stone tiling, dark oak timber and glamourous wall mirrors.

The restaurant has also replaced or reupholstered each of the 300 seats in the London Road restaurant to give a more comfortable dining experience. Additional booths are available for larger parties and the addition of high stools and long tables adds to the casual dining flavour.

The restaurant was the UK-wide groups flagship restaurant when it opened its doors in May 2013 and Mr Koo says the upgrade ensures that it once again has the most contemporary design in the 21-strong group.

He said “We have had a tremendous five years here in Derby and wanted to ensure that our loyal customers continue to enjoy their buffet meals with us.

“We are extremely grateful for everyone’s patience while we have been closed for this project and we are looking forward to welcoming back our diners tonight.”

Luxury leather benches lend the restaurant a more open plan feel and a contra-vision screen at the entrance featuring landmarks from across the world reflects the East meets West concept.

In the kitchen area Cosmo has replaced and added a number of hot plates in the cooking stations and added Cotswold Stone tiling outside the restaurant, along with new signage and information screens.

Work will not stop after the restaurant refurbishment, with plans to upgrade the bar area next on the agenda. And outside, two water-powered motion-sensor waterfalls are to be installed flanking the entrance steps.

The restaurant chain’s newest branch in Manchester city centre was the inspiration behind the refurbishment at COSMO Derby.

Designed by the multi award-winning Robert Angell – who has previously worked with Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing – COSMO Manchester was shortlisted for a Restaurant & Bar Award for its architectural design in 2018.

Diners can still enjoy a variety of authentic dishes from across the globe; from Chinese, Thai and Indian to Italian-inspired pizza and pasta. And, best of all, it’s unlimited – meaning guests can go back for seconds or event thirds.

Mr Koo added: “Our live cooking stations have not changed although our popular dessert counter is bigger and better lit. Our ice-cream machine, popcorn machine and chocolate fountain will always take centre stage in the dessert section.

“Our high standards remain and we can’t wait for Derby’s diners to come along and see how we’ve improved the COSMO experience.”
