Derby County footballer gifts city special school a birthday surprise

27/11/2018

Derby County footballer Bradley Johnson has provided a Derby school with a special birthday treat as they prepare to celebrate their 60th year.

St Giles School, the city’s only special primary school – based in Hampshire Road, will mark the occasion with a fun fair and a 1950s-themed tea party.

There will be a special appearance from Derby County mascot Rammie; a gift from Rams midfielder Bradley Johnson who has close links with St Giles.

Bradley, together with his wife Nereasha, helped to raise over £30,000 for the school earlier this year by hosting a gala dinner at Pride Park Stadium. Money raised will go towards funding a multi-use games area at St Giles.

The school’s recent celebrations – which include a national award for communications practitioner Karen Brownhill, highly commended for nurse Zoe Everingham at Derby Hospital’s Delivering Excellence Awards and recognition from the House of Commons for achieving an International School Award – will be marked.

St Giles’ executive headteacher, Clive Lawrence, said: “It has been a fantastic year for pupils and staff at St Giles. Our 60th birthday celebrations will bring together past and present staff, pupils and parents.

“The staff team have been working hard behinds the scenes to put together a programme of fun and exciting activities for everyone to get involved with. It’s fantastic news that Rammie will be able to join us for the celebrations and we continue to be grateful to Bradley Johnson and his family for their on-going support to the school.”
