The Chief Inspector of Schools has visited The Bemrose School to see for herself the hard work that lead to a recent ‘good’ rating from the education watchdog.
The head of Ofsted Amanda Spielman met with staff and students before enjoying a tour of the school, which caters for children aged between three and 19 years old.

Her visit came just days after the school announced that a team of inspectors had described it as a ‘good school’ which is “highly inclusive” with pupils who are “well-behaved” and “thrive”.
Ms Spielman was welcomed into the Uttoxeter New Road school by head girl Aroosa Naz and head boy Tauheed Mohammed before executive head teacher Neil Wilkinson showed her around the site.
She said: “This is a school that feels calm and organised – which is not a situation you find in every school I visit – and during my look around I witnessed an enthusiasm for learning from staff and pupils alike.
“It is very clear that The Bemrose School is making some very good progress and I’m sure the recent inspection report must be encouraging for all pupils and parents.
“It is clearly a high functioning and inclusive school that is keen to look after and develop the whole child, ensuring they are ready to go out into the adult world and be part of the workplace.
“I was also pleased to learn that teachers do not see areas for improvement as negatives but rather as an opportunity to improve their own skills and professional development.
“I haven’t visited Derby before, but it is an industrious city renowned for its contributions to engineering and technology. It is only right that we strive to ensure that future generations receive a standard of education that is fitting of the city’s name.”

Ms Spielman was joined on the tour by senior inspector Ian McNeilly and Ofsted’s regional director for the East Midlands, Emma Ing.
They learned about the school’s specialist unit for children with autism and the year 7 literacy and numeracy catch-up premium, which is having a positive impact on pupils’ achievements.
Executive head teacher Neil Wilkinson said: “I was delighted to welcome Amanda Spielman to Bemrose to show her the work that we are doing to ensure our young people leave school with the skills necessary to go on to lead successful lives.
“It is an exciting time for our school with an expansion programme and new building which will allow us to take more pupils and in September the first children who started in reception at our primary will move up to year 7 in the secondary.
“Amanda appreciated that a great number of our students come from a background of little or no education when they arrive at our school, which can clearly affect outcomes, and that a school in an area of high deprivation has to work harder than similar schools elsewhere.
“But she recognised that many of our strategies, such as the work we do with pupils who speak English as a second language, is high quality and successful.”
