A Derbyshire security products company has helped protect staff and visitors to one of London’s most prominent public buildings after installing a host of street planters in the shadow of Wembley Stadium’s giant arch.
Securiscape, based in Ashbourne, has recently finished fitting seven security planters across the glass-fronted entrance to Brent Civic Centre, the headquarters of north-west London’s Brent Borough Council.
Opened five years ago and designed to bring the council’s public and administrative functions under one roof, the £90m building has already won a host of architecture design awards.
It provides office space for 2,000 council employees, boasts a huge naturally lit foyer and atrium, a community hall, library and a civic chamber, while it is the most sustainable local authority building in the UK thanks to numerous green innovations.
Each of Securiscape’s planters has a display of evergreen foliage and is finished with brushed stainless steel decorated with double yellow stripes to complement the nearby security bollards.
To passers-by they look like ordinary street planters, however underneath the surround there is a high-tech steel framework which encases a tough polyethylene planter and requires fixings of just 100mm to anchor it firmly to the ground.
This ensures that the planter is strong enough to stop a 7.5 tonne truck travelling at 40mph in its tracks, earning them the industry’s coveted PAS 68-2010 security standard.
