St Giles bids farewell to “engine” of their Derby school

15/12/2020

A DERBY school has said a fond farewell to one of their longest-serving members of staff as she retires.

Lesley Ashdown has spent 22 years working at St Giles School, Derby’s only special primary school, and leaves at the end of the year.

Executive head teacher Clive Lawrence has thanked Lesley for her ‘hard work and dedication’ over the years.

He said: “Lesley is the ‘engine’ of our school and is the fount of all knowledge in terms of our office systems and procedures.

“This will be a huge loss to our school and I know that staff and pupils, both past and present, will be very sad to see her go.

“I personally would like to thank Lesley for her continued hard work, dedication and commitment to our school and wish her a very happy and relaxing retirement.”

Meanwhile, the school have been putting the finishing touches to their Christmas DVD, which will take place instead of the annual festive show.

Due to Covid restrictions which mean that no visitors are allowed on site – and classes working in ‘bubbles’ – the school have had to be creative and record the play in sections. The DVD will be edited over the next week and sent home to parents and carers at the end of term.

Mr Lawrence added: “Staff have been working very creatively behind the scenes to ensure that as many pupils as possible – those in school and those who are self-isolating – are included in this year’s Christmas show.

“Pupils have been working really hard and we can’t wait to share the final version with our friends and families.”
