Derby’s Commonwealth gold medallist Sandy Ryan joins Mayor to help land a knock-out blow at Tenpin’s charity show-down

07/05/2018

Derby’s gold-medal-winning boxer Sandy Ryan proved to be a knock-out success at ten pin bowling when she helped her team secure victory in a charity show-down.

Sandy, who won gold at the recent Commonwealth Games in Australia, celebrated her latest win when she took part in the head-to-head encounter at Tenpin Derby, in Sinfin, in aid of the Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre.

The match was organised by the bowling centre in Forester’s Park who invited the Mayor of Derby, Councillor John Whitby, to put together an all-male team and take on an all-female team captained by his wife, Juliette.

For every strike scored on the evening Tenpin agreed to donate £10 to the Mayor’s chosen charity and after a hard-fought match, the Mayoress’s team were crowned the winners, while a total of £640 was raised.

Mr Whitby said: “We thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and are extremely grateful to Tenpin for their generous donation – it will make a genuine difference to the Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Home.

“I think both our teams were fairly evening matched – in that neither were very good – but the stakes were high and the pressure was on.

“Luckily Tenpin agreed to donate £500 on top of our £10 per strike, so in the end we raised a significant amount, despite our lack of bowling skills.”

Also lining up for the Mayoress’s team was Derby County mascot Ewie, while Rammie took his place on the Mayor’s team. Representatives from the charity, which is one of five charities being supported by the Mayor during his year in office, made up the rest of the teams.

Sandy, who has her sights set on a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, added: “It was a fantastic night at Tenpin Derby and I’m so glad that I could be a part of it.

“To be on the winning team was the icing on the cake!”

Tenpin, based at Foresters Leisure Park, in Osmaston Park Road, has recently completed an extensive refurbishment programme and last month celebrated its relaunch with a VIP events attended by former Derby County player and BBC Radio Derby commentator Craig Ramage.

Next month it is hosting a charity fun day in aid of the East Midlands charity When You Wish Upon A Star, which makes wishes come true for children with life-limiting illnesses.
