Esteem Multi-Academy Trust CEO Julian Scholefield announces retirement after 30 years in education

18/11/2025

After more than three decades dedicated to improving education for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in the Midlands, Julian Scholefield, founding Chief Executive Officer of Esteem Multi-Academy Trust (MAT), has announced his decision to retire.

Julian founded Esteem MAT in 2018 with a clear vision: to create a truly inclusive organisation where every child, regardless of need or background, could access exceptional learning experiences and the right support to thrive.

Under his leadership, Esteem MAT has grown from a pioneering idea into a values-driven trust spanning the East and West Midlands. During his tenure, the Trust expanded its network of schools and specialist services while maintaining a strong culture of collaboration, care, and high standards.

“Julian’s leadership has been nothing short of transformational,” said Kathryn Boulton

Chair of Trustees. “His unwavering belief in inclusion and excellence has created the foundation upon which the Trust’s identity has been built and ensured that every learner is valued and supported.”

Beyond Esteem, Julian has made an outstanding contribution to education nationally, serving as a headteacher, Ofsted lead inspector, and trustee of organisations including the National Autistic Society and Oasis Community Learning.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my career to serve the children, families, and colleagues of Esteem Multi-Academy Trust. From the very beginning, our shared purpose has been to build an inclusive community where every learner feels seen, valued, and able to achieve their potential. I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished together and deeply grateful to the incredible people who have made Esteem what it is today.”

As part of the planned transition, Karen Hayes, currently Chief Operating Officer at Esteem MAT, has been appointed Interim Chief Executive Officer, from February 1, 2026.

“Karen’s deep understanding of Esteem’s ethos and strategic direction will ensure stability and continuity as the Trust enters its next chapter,” said Kathryn.
