21/08/2025

Derby secondary The Bemrose School has reported its best set of GCSE results ever today with big improvements in grades across the board.

Executive head teacher Neil Wilkinson said the school’s achievements were down to student commitment and unwavering support from staff.

The school’s 2025 results have seen a 12 per cent improvement in English and Maths grades; a 10 per cent improvement in grades of 5 and above, with the average having risen by half a grade overall.

The Bemrose School students, from left, Mazia Fatima, Jessica Kaur, Aleeza Ali and Tehniat Mubashar celebrate their GCSE grades.

One of 180 students collecting their results was Tehniat Mubashar who scored highly with five 9 grades, an 8 and three 7s, plus a level 2 distinction.

Tehniat, who is going on further study at sixth form, said she was particularly pleased with her 9 in physics.

She said: “It was so stressful! But the teachers are so wonderful. I’m so glad as I wanted to make my physics teacher proud.”

Another top scoring student was Benjamin Xie who scored 9s in maths, further maths, biology, physics and Chinese as well as 8s in geography and chemistry.

Benjamin is going on to study maths, further maths, business studies and economics and hopes to become an accountant.

Hafsah Naseer, who is going on to sixth form at Bemrose School, was delighted with her grades.

“I didn’t think I’d get this many 9s!” she said. “I tried so hard and all the effort has paid off. I though I’d get 6s and 7s, I didn’t think I’d get 9s!”

Jessica Kaur was very happy with 9s for physics and chemistry and hopes to go on to study medicine, while Mazia Fatima said she was proud of her results and is going on to study biology, chemistry and psychology at sixth form.

Maymuma Bint-Umar was happy to get 9s for art and design and computer science, while Aleeza Ali was also pleased with her results and is going to study science subjects at A-level.

Aleeza said: “Bemrose was the best school I could have chosen actually. There were so many opportunities for us. Those opportunities de-stress you because you know you have done all the activities and enrichment so now all you have to do is get the grades.”

Ayomide Makinee sees her results for the first time – and they’re what she needs to go onto to study her A Levels

Ayomide Makinee picked up 7s in combined science, an 8 in food tech and a level 2 distinction for creative iMedia. She is going on to study A-levels in law, politics, religious studies ethics and philosophy, with an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) in feminism. Alisha Hussain was happy with a selection of 6 and 7 grades and is going to study biology, chemistry and maths.

She said Bemrose School’s provision of support such as revision classes had been very helpful.

As a result of its stellar results, The Bemrose School is expanding its sixth form provision this year.

The Bemrose School head teacher Neil Wilkinson congratulates Benjamin Xie. The school has achieved its best-ever results and is now expanding its Sixth Form.

Mr Wilkinson said: “The bottom line and the most important thing is that these results are a credit to the students’ hard work and their commitment to their education, that has allowed them to get the grades they have and now make the choices they can.

“In the expectation of these results we have changed the profile of classes we are offering at A-level and we will expand our sixth form provision, especially in sciences and maths.

“It’s the hard work and unwavering support of staff that has got us here and also the commitment from the students.”
