Colleagues at Derbyshire-based Lubrizol go head-to-head in old-school gaming challenge for British Heart Foundation

26/03/2019

Colleagues at a Hazelwood company went wheel-to-wheel and fought bare-knuckle style when they took each other on in a charity challenge – by playing retro computer games.

The event, which took place over two lunch-times last week, saw staff at Lubrizol, in Nether Lane, indulge in a friendly spot of on-screen inter-department rivalry in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

Held as a joint operation between the company’s Global Communications and Information Solutions departments, the event was open to everyone across the company, who were invited to pick up a controller and play a series of games including Pac-Man, Streetfighter, Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario Kart in return for a donation.

A prize of a Game Boy mug was on offer to the player who got the highest score at Pac-Man, while staff in the company restaurant joined the fun by baking Mario cupcakes and a Tetris cake, as well as a Mario pizza and a Pac-Man cherry pie.

Around 50 staff from across the company took part in the event, which raised £131.45 for the BHF, which recently agreed to be Lubrizol’s official charity partner for the next two years.

Alex Jackson, global communications student, said: “This was the first time our two departments worked together and it was a huge success, with plenty of people coming along to play over the two days.”

Tim Hollingsworth, TIS manager, EMEA Network Services at Lubrizol, added: “There was a lot of friendly rivalry in the room and some really tight contests, but everyone enjoyed themselves and it was really good to see everyone come together.”
